KHLT 1040 AM in Honolulu gave me a verification for my reception of their broadcast as seen below.

It was an email QSL and the verie signer was Jake O’Neill, General Manager jake@klight.org

MW listening in New Zealand

I have been back in New Zealand on family business. Peter Mott, of the NZ Radio DX League has set up a remote listening post at his home about 250 km north of Auckland. It is a Kiwi SDR (see HERE) - software defined radio. It is only available to NZRDXL members, however.

The point is that it gives those of us in the League an opportunity to listen to distant radio stations relatively free of noise or interference - except when his occasional neighbour turns on the plasma TV!!

I have enjoyed listening at nights. The first time I tried I didn't think much of it. Reception was mediocre to say the least. However, so were conditions! Things have improved since then and I have made a few loggings. The aerial basically points north, so the Pacific Islands, the east coast of Asia and the west coast of the USA come into play.

I have sent reception reports to the following: KUAU 1570 (Hawaii), KLHT 1040 (Hawaii), and KPRP 650 (Hawaii). In addition I have a tentative report out to KNDI 1270 (Hawaii).

The 500 MW station in Korea was almost definitely heard a couple of nights ago on 1170. I will try again for that one too.

A new logging

RNZI was heard this morning at 2352 UTC on 17675. The 16mb is not good at present, but this signal stood up quite well. It was reasonably stable and heard at SINPO at 35344.

New Verifications

Adrian Sainsbury has issued me with three Radio New Zealand International verifications. They are broadcasts on 15720, 11725 and the new test frequency of 7355 kHz. The latter was heard at 1340 UTC and was quite a good signal. It runs from 1300-1650 UTC.

In addition another eQSL came in from Myanmar Radio on 5915, heard at 1038UTC on 11 October 2016.

New loggings

All India Radio was logged on 9380 at 1050 UTC. SINPO was 45343-4
BBC World Service via Meyerton (Sth Africa) 15400 and via Dubai on 17640 at 0705 UTC. 15400 was SINPO 25343 and Dubai was 25453.
Radio New Zealand International 11725 at 0732 UTC. Signal was not there at 0630, so I suspect darkness arriving in New Zealand helped improve it. SINPO was 34453. I also logged them on 15720 at 0340 UTC. SINPO was 35353
Radio Mashaal was heard on 3 frequencies 12130 and 13580 coming out of Kuwait and 15760 from Thailand at 0900 UTC.

In addition I received a nice QSL card from All India Radio for their broadcast on 9940 kHz.

A new logging

Radio New Zealand International was logged last night on 9765 kHz with SINPO of 3-4 5 4 5 4

I also logged RNZI on 11610. The signal wasn't as good 34543. I had a listen to RNZI on 9700 at 2200 local time and it was also a pretty good signal - probably as per 9765.

A pleasing logging!

I got up this morning at 2045 to have a listen for São Tome on 1530. There was no sign of that station. Instead I was treated to country sounding music as well as announcements in a language I didn't really understand. I knew it wasn't Thai or Chinese, but until the magic words Amen and Manila were uttered I was in the dark.

It is DZME, Radyo Uno in Manilla. Lots of announcements, a bit of music and morning phone calls.
Signal is fair, no interference of any note, some atmospheric noise and a little fading. It was a pretty good signal and certainly a whole lot of details will come from my recording.

Now to get it back!

More loggings

Tuesday evening was better - a bit quieter.

VOA 4930 and 15580 via Botswana was the first logging. 4930 was heard at 1600 with a SINPO reading of 35242/3 15580 was heard at levels of 25452 - there was a carrier on this frequency, but VOA in English could be heard clearly through it.
Radio NZ International 6170 was logged. The signal was heard at 1637 with a SINPO reading of 33453. There was bad splash from CRI on 6175.
AIR Hyderabad 4800 was logged at 1707 with a programme of traditional music - signing accompanied by an harmonium and drums. SINPO was 44554 - a good signal. The programme was in parallel with AIR Bhopal 4810 and AIR Chennai 4920. Bhopal was very good. Chennai was mixed with PBS Xijang 33553.

New logging (and verification)

Nothing terribly exotic. It was Radyo Pilipinnas on 3 frequencies 17820, 15640 and 12010. This is their English broadcast from 0200-0330. All 3 signals were very good.

I have had quite a bit of frustration trying to find a successful address to send the reports to, however, I have messaged them through Facebook, attaching a copy of my report and an earlier, unanswered, one. The address they advertise is dzrp.radyopilipinas@gmail.com Fingers are crossed that this might be more successful!

PS Verifications came through by email from the above address about an hour after sending the report.

Radio Puntland One on 13880. Reception was at 1210 UTC and the signal was heard at S3I5N2P4O2. The programme featured people speaking in Somali. It was a rather lengthy discussion about goodness knows what.

Further loggings

Sunday 23 October

Conditions were better on Sunday evening than the previous two, but still noisy. Nevertheless I managed to log and have sent reports away to AIR Bhopal on 4810 SINPO 35253; AIR Jeypore on 5040 SINPO 35253 and RTI iLoveMusic on 1557. This is based in Taiwan and had a SINPO reading of 45353.

There is nothing terribly spectacular there, but then the conditions weren't either. As Ray Crawford drummed into me as a young DXer - power is nothing - propagation is everything. The propagation was not great.

New loggings

With my wife away in Australia I have taken the opportunity to go to bed early, get up late and do some listening. Thus far I have been disappointed with conditions. 

Friday night 21/10 was noisy and not a lot of any interest was getting through. There was the usual draft of Thai stations that will not verify no matter what, a number of Vietnamese stations and a few Chinese stations, but not a lot else. I thought AIR Kolkata had popped up on 657 kHz. Sitar music was being played at 1757; however, AIR stations close at 1740. What I heard may well have been Asianet Radio from Dubai. On SW things were very noisy. I did manage to log KCBS on 3250 in parallel with 3320.

Saturday night 22/10 was still noisy, but better. I looked for AIR Kolkata but there was just a very noisy carrier on the frequency. I managed to log CRI on 1080 in English in parallel with 6060, which was a very good signal. 1080 was heard with SINPO 35343. Then I logged Cambodia RNK from Phnom Penh on 918. It was a very good signal and signed off with what I suppose was the National Anthem at 1704.

New veries

A new verie has arrived thanks to Adrian Sainsbury from Radio New Zealand International. It was heard on 5th October on 7425 kHz. It offers the best signal we have had in our 10 years overseas coming from Radio NZ International. Unfortunately it is disappearing from the bands when the B16 schedule kicks in.

Another new verie came in later in the evening. This one was for the Bulgarian AM station Horizont on 576 kHz. This was heard in January 2015 whilst on holiday in Istanbul.

The verie signer was Konstantin Kounov, Chief Engineer kounov@bnr.bg

The tip came via a Worldwide DX Club posting. I had tried several times to get a verie. Less than two hours after emailing it to Mr Kounov back came the reply. He said it had never been passed to him.

A new verie

A new verie arrived today. AIR GOS  on 9380 via Aligarh received on 3/9/2016 at 0123 UTC.

It is a nice verie - a postcard of Shey Palace in Ladakh. It looks a barren place!

Loggings 5th October

6050 RTM Asyik FM identifying as Radio Malaysia. Excellent signal with ids and music. Lots of announcer talk. 1008 UTC

7425 Radio New Zealand International - signal heard at good strength with jazz. 1033 UTC. It is nice to hear the voice of home.

1242 Voice of Vietnam - fair/ good with a bit of fading. Vietnamese talk and an ethnic language. My Vietnamese learner at school couldn't understand part of it, but the moment a different announcer spoke he told me exactly what was being said. 

A mystery solved

The mystery signal on 9355 a couple of nights ago has been identified as RFA via Dushanbe. According to AJ Janitschek the station played a live interview in English, which was translated into Tibetan. The verie arrived by mail 26 October.

A couple of new loggings and a verification

By setting my AOR 7030+ to come on at a certain time and by leaving my portable recorder on when I go to bed, I can DX when I am asleep! I have about 24 hours of recording time available and a very good battery.

I logged RFA in Tibetan via Dushanbe on 9355 at 1500 UTC. This may have been the mystery station heard in English mixed with another language (Tibetan??) the day before.

I furthermore logged the Voice of Mongolia on 12035 in English at 0900 UTC. It was a superb signal 45555. Hopefully a verie will come from it.

Finally I logged All India Radio in Urdu at 1015 UTC on 9940 and 11620. Reception was very good on the former. The signal quality was good on the latter, but it was mixed with CRI. 9940 was actually 9941.10. The signal tended to wander a bit!

The verie that dropped into my inbox was from Radio Sedaye Bahar via Moldova. The verie signer was Sergey Omelchenko, Technical Director of Pridnestrovskiy Radiotelecentr (PRTC) and the email address is: prtc@idknet.com

A curious incident in the night! A mystery!!

I set my radio to automatic and set the recorder going in my desire to log RFA on 9355 at 1530 UTC on 1 October.

When I sat down this morning to listen to it, I may have logged RFA, although I suspect it is more probably CNR broadcasting over the top of it. However, I also got a station broadcasting in English. It is most likely to be an Indonesian station. It was an interview with someone involved with the Dalai Lama. There were a number of mentions of him as well as Jakarta and Indonesia. Japan was also mentioned.

I cannot find any mention of anybody broadcasting in English on this frequency - in fact the only station on 9355 is RFA.
